School Donations Kicking Off Share Your Christmas Food Drive

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

We are less than three days away from the annual Kiii-TV Share Your Christmas Food Drive, and this week, Coastal Bend schools are getting all of their collections off to the Food Bank.

All week long, members of the National Guard are going around and picking up the donations collected by students and staff at schools all over the Coastal Bend. School donations have always been a big part of Share Your Christmas, helping to get the food drive started.

On Tuesday, Smith Elementary students were preparing their food drive collections to be sent to the Food Bank, and National Guard crews were loading up boxes of food from the there as well as Woodlawn Elementary.

"It's been really, really good," said Sgt. First Class Alexander Olveda of the National Guard. "They've really helped out. I know everything we get is going to the Food Bank, and it's going to help a lot of people."

"We encourage the kids to gather extra food cans and bring them to the campus, and we donate them to the community," Smith Elementary Assistant Principal Loy Aldape said. "You know, these kids are community minded. They're civic minded, and they want to do and give back what they can."

The 26th annual Share Your Christmas Food Drive kicks off Friday, Dec. 6. Joe Gazin will be out bright and early in front of the Kiii-TV studios accepting donations, and a host of other 3News personalities will be out at various HEB locations in Corpus Christi.

Kiii Chief Meteorologist Bill Vessey will also be traveling to several HEB locations, starting the day in Kingsville. So be sure to mark that day on your calendar.
