December Designated as Safe and Sober Month

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A local effort is now in place to try and prevent drunk driving deaths this holiday season.

The Corpus Christi Police Department is teaming up with the Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse as December has now been designated Safe and Sober Month. On Friday, they held a kick-off celebration to spread awareness and save lives.

In this last year, Corpus Christi has seen an increase of 20-percent in DWIs. Police hope that this holiday season, residents drink responsibly.

"It's not your right to drink and drive on our roadways," Police Chief Floyd Simpson said. "In fact, you are infringing in my rights, okay? I have a right to safely traverse the streets."

This holiday season, police will have a phlebotomist on staff to draw blood, making the process of detecting alcohol in a driver's system much easier for officers.
