Candy Cane Lane Celebration Will Kick Off Saturday Night

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The Candy Cane Lane celebration is alive and well after organizers applied for a permit on Friday.

Streets will be blocked off for three or four hours Saturday night as the event takes place. Co-organizer Abel Bocanegra said there is no animosity between residents and the City over the permit process.

"There's not going to be a parade. It's too late, and because of last year, the traffic congestion, we couldn't come up with a concrete plan to keep the traffic moving. Flowing," Bocanegra said. "So we wanted to concentrate on just having the Candy Cane Lane celebration."

Some residents expressed concern over the cost of a permit, insurance and paying the cost of traffic officers to handle the expected crowds, but City Councilman Chad Magill said some good samaritans have already offered to help.

"I have called some people in the community, and I believe people are willing to donate or underwrite the event," Magill said. "We just needed that first step of the application being turned in."

The organizers say to bundle up the kids and bring some treat bags on Saturday as you enjoy the decorations and the holiday spirit.

We headed out to Labonte Park, one of the most popular camp sites on this Easter Sunday to see how families there were enjoying the day! The park located just off I-37 was filled with families camping out. People have been camping out all week just to make sure they got a good spot! The weather was definitely in their favor. It seems no one was safe from the cascarones, as some of the campers organized an attack on our very own kiii camera man, Jay Pena.More >>
