CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A family living in the 900 block of Buford, near 6th Street, were forced to evacuate their home after a fire broke out in their attic at around 9 a.m. Tuesday.

At the time of the fire, at least four people were inside of the home. Firefighters were able to get the blaze under control within minutes, but it did cause some panic for the homeowners.

Petra Gonzales, the homeowner, said her son alerted family members after seeing sparks in the ceiling of their home. Gonzales grabbed her five-year old daughter and dog, Jalapeno, and got out of the home. Her husband and son were not far behind and were able to get out unharmed.

According to firefighters, the blaze started in the attic. Fortunately, they were able to contain it, not allowing it to spread to other parts of the home. Investigators determined that the cause of the fire was electrical. They believe an overheated wire ignited the insulation inside of the attic.

The Red Cross did step in to provide the family with aid.
