CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The Corpus Christi City Council approved Tuesday the purchase of pumps and motors for the Mary Rhodes Phase 2 Pipeline project.

The City will pay just over $4.5 million to an Austin-based company to build the pump station on the Colorado River. City Manager Ron Olson said the project is finally taking shape.

"Rain is what happens between droughts, and it's only a matter of time until those water supplies are challenged again," Olson said. "We need to stay well ahead of the demand curve on water supply, and this helps us do that."

The project means the City will have access to 35,000 more acre-feet of water if needed in time of drought.
