Shop With a Cop Participant Looks Forward to Time with Officers

Posted: Updated:

The Shop with a Cop program pairs local law enforcement officers with less fortunate children for a special shopping spree, but for one child, it's not about the shopping.

Smith Elementary fifth-grader Mason Cobern is not necessarily interested in toys or new clothes. What he looks forward to each year is the annual Shop with a Cop event.

"It's not about getting gifts," Cobern said. "Just spending time with the people you love, and I love how the cops do their job, and I love spending time with them and making them feel good."

Cobern has participated in the event for the past three years, and he said every year has been a special one, especially when he was paired with Corpus Christi Police Department Sgt. Denise Pace last year.

"When we went to McDonalds, me and her just sat together and we bonded real well," Cobern said.

So it was a special treat when Cobern not only met a new officer this year, but also got to see Sgt. Pace again.

"I'm so excited," Pace said. "When I saw him, I didn't mean to come over here and get on video, but I wanted to come and say hi to him because he's such a special kid."

Cobern said each year, the Shop with a Cop event makes him feel like he is right at home with family.

"When they come and work with us, I feel like their kid," Cobern said. "I feel like they are like my mom or my dad."

The Shop with a Cop program will run throughout December.
