Officers Look Forward to Participating in Shop With a Cop Program

KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) -

Children often look forward to participating in the Shop with a Cop program, but it's not just the kids that look forward to it, but the law enforcement officers as well.

Officers from around the Kingsville and Rivera areas spent some time Wednesday morning shopping with children at the Wal-Mart in Kingsville. One officer shared a past experience he had while working in the program.

"I had one from Gillette, a sixth grader. We had lunch together also. We were in a limit. He wanted an extra pair of shoes to have for the weekends. I went ahead and set them aside at this store, and after they were gone and I came back and I purchased them for him, and the next day I took them to school," Kleberg County Constable Cid Zavala said. "He was just ecstatic. He got the second pair of tennis shoes that he wanted."

The Shop with a Cop program pairs up students and police officers to go on a holiday shopping spree together. It's not just a way to provide children with a special gift on Christmas, but the program introduces the kids to authority figures and helps build a trust between them.

Kiii-TV is a proud sponsor of the Shop with a Cop program.
