Mathis Police Department Gets a New Chief

MATHIS (Kiii News) -

Gerald Arismendez was sworn in Tuesday as the new Mathis Police Chief.

"I want to permeate myself throughout the community and encourage the community, the people, the citizens to come forward and visit with me, you know?" Arismendez said. "I want to partner with them so that we can take control of the city, you know, effectively, so that we can do good things here."

Arismendez said he believes in having an open-door policy. Before coming to Mathis, he worked for the Orange Grove Police Department for about six years. He also spent more than seven years with the Beeville Police Department and served a term on the city council there as well.

Back in August, when Arismendez was a sergeant in the Orange Grove Police Department, he once carried a suspect on his shoulder out of some thick brush. The suspect was barefoot and had led officers on a footchase into the brush and upon his surrender, he complained of discomfort from thorns and hot soil.
