Duval County Authorities Uncover Marijuana Distribution Point

Posted: Updated:
SAN DIEGO (Kiii News) -

Three people were arrested in Duval County Thursday night in connection with a trailer home that the Sheriff's Office says has been trafficking drugs for quite some time.

The Sheriff's Office said the people living in the mobile home would hide the marijuana by burying it in the backyard.

They had been conducting surveillance on the home for a long time, but on Thursday, they caught someone leaving the residence with pot inside of his vehicle.

"Officer Trigo, while doing surveillance on a resident down County Road 103, observed a vehicle leaving the residence that they've been looking at for a good while now, and noticed an individual driving," Duval County Sheriff Romeo Ramirez said. "The individual that was driving is actually a subject of interest who's been caught before with narcotics. Trafficking and stuff."

The Sheriff's Office said the San Diego Police Department pulled over 51-year old Robert Pena and found the pot in his car.

Based on that traffic stop, and previous investigations and surveillance, the Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant Thursday night on the trailer home and ranch on County Road 103. They found marijuana buried about two-feet deep within the 10-acre track.

"We believe that the marijuana gets trafficked in there and then that's pretty much a pickup point for all the local distributors, or whoever is out there distributing marijuana," Ramirez said. "So they probably, we believe they're receiving anywhere from 40 to maybe 75 pounds or so at any given time."

The Sheriff's Office said that on the streets, a pound of marijuana in Duval County sells for $5,000-$6,000 a pound.

Pablo Garcia, 71, and Irma Trevino, 56, were charged with the manufacture or delivery of a controlled substance. The Sheriff's Office said they would use a tractor as a tool to bury the marijuana in the backyard. Investigators used that same tractor to find the marijuana, and they also seized the tractor.

The Sheriff's Office wanted to point out that the San Diego Police Department played an important role in the bust.

DENVER, Colorado (CNN) -- Coming to the Mile High City this weekend was the perfect 65th birthday present for Karen Stevenson. She and her husband drove out of the Bible Belt to experience, for the first time, what it's like to buy and smoke weed legally. She wore a T-shirt featuring an image of María Sabina, a late-Mexican shaman, puffing on a joint -- a shirt that, until this day, she never dared to wear outside her Cape Girardeau, Missouri, home.
