Posted: Updated:

Four U.S. service members were injured Saturday when gunfire hit their aircraft while attempting to land in South Sudan, where the troops were to help evacuate U.S. citizens, the Pentagon said. The evacuation mission was aborted and the aircraft were diverted to an airfield outside the country, Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said.

All four U.S. service members who were injured when their aircraft were attempting to land in South Sudan on Saturday are in stable condition, a U.S. military official said.
