Volunteers Make HEB's Annual Feast of Sharing Possible

Posted: Updated:

We are just a day away from the big Feast of Sharing holiday meal at the American Bank Center, where thousands of local residents will be treated to a nice dinner.

It's all made possible by the folks at HEB and a lot of volunteers.

"It takes a whole bunch of planning just to get a whole bunch of people come together," HEB volunteer Pete Tovar said.

They call themselves the Gang of Eight -- eight retired HEB employees who give of their time to make the Feast of Sharing event extra special. They don't just volunteer their time for the event here in Corpus Christi, but all of the other similar feasts put on by HEB throughout the state.

It's a lot of work, and a lot of time away from home, but they do it because the meals mean so much to so many.

"In November, we did, we started in Midland, San Angelo, Fort Worth, Dallas, McAllen, Brownsville, Harlingen, Laredo and Austin. That's the November one," Tovar said. "Then in December, we started in Odessa, Abilene, Waco, Killeen, Victoria and this is our last meal here, Christmas. Even that will be tomorrow, and we enjoy it. Everybody enjoys it."

Volunteers are still needed for this year's Feast of Sharing meal, which is being held for its 15th year from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the American Bank Center. Volunteers are needed to help clean up after the lunchtime meal, and should set aside time between 1 p.m.-3 p.m. to help out.
