Someone to Know: Dr. Gloria Scott at Solomon Coles High School

Posted: Updated:

In 2005, Solomon Coles High School was set to be demolished, but that was stopped after Dr. Gloria Scott brought a federal lawsuit, and she has continued to help ever since.

Along with helping to save the school, Scott volunteers at the high school, already reaching 10 years. She is Someone to Know.

"It's just a blessing having Dr. Scott here," said Ronnie Medrano, assistant principal at Solomon Coles High School. "She's been a partner for many years."

Scott has been volunteering at the school for the past 10 years, trying to get children to make education a priority.

"It's important that they are able to see what they can do. Get their self esteem, get their capabilities validated," Scott said. "That's the main thing."

She has also spear headed a program to help teachers help students with their school work at their home.

Dr. Scott volunteers to help students pursue their goal of graduation, but it doesn't stop there. She's also persistent, pushing students to graduate from college. She aims to get each student focused and on the right track.

She says her motto for volunteering was taught to her at an early age.

"Trying really hard," Scott said. "That's been my life. A lot of people gave back to me when I was in Houston. I was taught to lead by example when I was five years old. To give back. And that's what I tried to do."
