Four Arrested After Christmas Eve Shooting on City's Westside

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

At least one person was injured and four people were detained by police after a shooting Tuesday on the city's westside.

The violence unfolded where the Crosstown Expressway meets Mussett Street, near the Ben Garza Park, just before 1 p.m. Two groups of people were shooting at one another, and police are now trying to figure out if the shooting was gang related.

Shell casings littered the street, which was quickly surrounded by crime scene tape. Bullets had struck a nearby apartment building and busted out a car window.

"It sounded like fireworks at first," a witness said. "We turned around and saw everybody, the guy shooting and stuff."

"With the amount of rounds that were fired, and the type, it's good no innocent bystanders were hit," said Captain Anthony Sanders of the Corpus Christi Police Department

A white Jeep was one of the vehicles that police believe was involved in the shooting. Inside it, they found several guns, including assault rifles.

Officers were able to arrest three people, but another suspect took off on foot when police showed up. Willie Cabrera, a resident of that neighborhood, said the fleeing suspect actually ran into his apartment to try and get away.

"He came out through the middle. He had seen my door open so he just ran in there," Cabrera said. "He kept telling me, 'I got money. I got money.' I said, 'you ran into the wrong house.'"

Police were able to take the fourth suspect into custody.

Blood was found on the ground at the scene of the crime, leading police to believe that someone was hit during the violence, but that person has not come forward.

A second vehicle that police believe was involved in the shootout was found a couple of hours later at the Northside Manor Apartments. It had several bullet holes in it as well.

Police said the four suspects could be facing federal charges in the shooting, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is also investigating the case.
