CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

An assault that took place over the weekend on Sam Rankin Street led to the death of a 60-year old man, making it Corpus Christi's 17th and final homicide of 2013.

The man was assaulted by his step-grandson, who he helped raise. Family members of the victim, 60-year old Roy Saldivar, said it all happened because Saldivar had been drinking for two days and started an altercation with his step-grandson, causing him to retaliate in self defense.

Saldivar died of his injuries on New Year's Day, and the Nueces County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide, saying the official cause was blunt force trauma to the head.

The step-grandson, 19-year old Ruben Ramirez, has been charged with aggravate assault.

According to family members, Saldivar and Ramirez lived together and would frequently argue. They said that on Sunday afternoon, Saldivar began telling Ramirez and his girlfriend to leave the house, and then allegedly attacked him. Ramirez fought back, ultimately putting Saldivar in the hospital, where he died from his injuries Wednesday.

"They were always fighting because he was an alcoholic, so they were always getting into arguments with everybody," said Ruby Gonzalez, Saldivar's stepdaughter and Ramirez' aunt. "He was always fighting with everybody, but he was still a good man, though."

"According to what's been told to us, he attacked Ruben with a flashlight. He hit Ruben with a flashlight and that's when Ruben turned around to get away from him and started hitting him," Ramirez' stepmother Mary Anguiano said. "He fell and that's when he hit his head. He hit his head on the foot board of the bed."

Police said now that Saldivar has died, the aggravated assault charge may be bumped up to murder, but that will be up to the District Attorney's Office.

In the meantime, a benefit account has been set up to help Saldivar's family pay cover his funeral costs. The account is under the name Ruby Ann Gonzalez at Kleberg Bank.
