Judge Chesney Resigns to Run for Precinct 4 County Commissioner

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Judge Brent Chesney resigned Friday in order to continue his run for Precinct 4 County Commissioner.

The Texas Constitution allows the judge to stay on the bench while he seeks another office, but there is also a judicial cannon that says he cannot stay on the bench. Chesney said he just felt the best thing to do is to resign.

He has been the judge for County Court at Law 5 for three years. He oversees all Child Protective Service cases, juvenile cases and court of appeals for the Justice of the Peace and municipal court for the county.

"I wanted to do something different," Chesney said. "This is a very emotionally draining court. Very difficult thing to do, and to take care of these kids that are in need all the time."

Chesney will continue to be on the bench until the county judge and commissioners appoint a replacement.
