Someone to Know: Gil Gomez and Family

Posted: Updated:

For the past five years, a local family has been providing meals to the elderly here in the Coastal Bend. They've made giving back a family tradition, and they are "Someone to Know."

Gil Gomez and his family were going door to door at the Figueroa Square housing complex in Robstown on New Year's Day, delivering home-cooked meals to the elderly who live here.

"The residents are really appreciative. They appreciate and thank us," Gomez said. "Some people invite us into their house. Some people even give us candy or cookies or something because we've done it several years now, so they expect us to be there."

Gomez said he and his family love doing it. They say they began the New Year's tradition over five years ago as a way of giving back to the community by helping to ensure that someone remembers the people at the start of every year. Gil Gomez hopes that others seeing his family in action will spur them into doing something charitable this year.

"I think it would inspire maybe other people to do the same thing we're doing," Gomez said. "It doesn't cost that much, you know."

Gomez and his family volunteer for other causes throughout the year.

"We're not doing this for the recognition or to say we did something to brag," Gomez said. "It's just something that we felt like we needed to do or had to do, and we wanted to do. Nobody is forcing us to do this, and we're not trying to get attention or recognition or something like that."
