Beaumont's first homicide case of 2014 turned over to DA

A Beaumont Police Department spokesperson has released the name of a man who was shot to death Monday night.

The victim is identified as Emanuel Burleigh, 20, of Beaumont.  Burleigh's next of kin have been notified of his death.

Just before 8 p.m. Monday, officers were called to a shooting in the 5600 block of Lancaster Lane. When they arrived they found Burleigh with a gunshot wound to the upper body. Paramedics told police he was already dead when the officers arrived.

Officers spoke with witnesses and determined a suspect. The identity of the suspect has not been released as of 11 a.m. Tuesday.

A police spokesperson said the suspect voluntarily accompanied detectives to the Police Station to give a statement. Detectives also took statements from other witnesses at the scene.

Beaumont Police Sgt. Rob Flores said information is still very preliminary, but it appears that Burleigh and the suspect were acquaintances. According to witnesses, they had been involved in an altercation at another location earlier in the evening. The two parted after that altercation.

Police say it appears Burleigh showed up at the house in the 5600 block of Lancaster and confronted the suspect again. The disturbance became physical and the suspect produced a gun and fired it at Burleigh.

The suspect was released by police.  The case has been forwarded to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office for further review.
