Injured Green-N-Go Cab Driver Opens Up About Accident

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

He was severely injured after being struck by an accused drunk driver, and for the first time since the accident, cab driver Tom Nelson described what he's going through.

Dash-cam video from Nelson's Green-N-Go cab caught the disturbing moment when he was hit at Staples and Saratoga during the early morning hours of Dec. 5. The 21-year old driver that hit him has been charged with intoxication assault.

"Everything is healing like it's supposed to. Going to take time," Nelson said. "I broke my finger in three places. Big bone. Same thing with the pelvis. It will take a long time to heal, no matter how many screws they put in there."

Nelson has been laying in his hospital bed for close to a month, still in pain, and still waiting for the day he can walk out of the hospital and go back to work.

"I'm not the person to be inside. I'm always outside. Starting to get a little stir crazy there," Nelson said. "I'm trying to recover, trying to get as healthy as I can to stand or get in a wheelchair. Got to get my mobility back."

Nelson said the hardest part is not having his family by his side. He is a husband and father of two autistic children, with a baby on the way, but his family is currently in Pennsylvania. Green-N-Go Cabs is working to get them down here.

"My wife is my best friend," Nelson said. "It's the same thing for her. She's going crazy up there. She wants to be down here. Just lean on each other. All we can do."

Before Nelson was hit, he was working to find a house. That plan has been put on hold.

"I just need someone who is willing to help me out. I don't have an income right now. The only time I make money is when I'm driving a cab," Nelson said. "I've got money to put down six, seven, eight months down. I just need an apartment willing to work with me."

Green-N-Go is trying to help Nelson do just that, and aside from all of their help, Nelson said prayers and donations from the community have been overwhelming.

"I was blown away by how many people have been following it on Facebook," Nelson said. "You go and look at one of my stories someone posted, there's like 900 likes. I go through it and I don't know any of those people. All these people are talking about how they've been praying for me. I appreciate it. I need all the prayer I can get. Without God, I wouldn't have anything."

Green-N-Go Cabs has already put up six months worth of rent for an apartment complex to get Nelson's family to the Coastal Bend. If you would like to help, give them a call at 361-299-9999.
