Future Water Supply Major Topic at Southside Business Meeting

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The future of our water supply was one of the main topics discussed Thursday at the monthly Southside Business meeting hosted by the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce.

The Chamber plans to make water advocacy one of its top priorities this year. The City is preparing to build the Mary Rhodes Pipeline 2 and is also looking at whether a desalination plant is a cost-effective idea to ensure a stable water supply.

Recent drought conditions plagued the Coastal Bend for a number years, and the Chamber of Commerce wants to make sure we do not go through a situation like that again.

"We're going to bring water to the forefront of our advocacy program so that we can begin to educate ourselves and public on how to solve our long-term water issues," Chamber CEO Foster Edwards said.

City Council will vote on approving a contractor for the Mary Rhodes Pipeline 2 project on Feb. 1. Construction is set to begin in April and wrap up in May of 2015. The total cost is set at $160 million.
