Artist Renderings of New Harbor Bridge Put on Display

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Artist renderings of what the new Harbor Bridge might look like show just how modern the new bridge could be. The renderings were displayed at a public meeting Thursday night.

Technical and Citizen Advisory committees with the Metropolitan Planning Organization were at the meeting, which was hosted by the Texas Department of Transportation, where the renderings were displayed. They were showed what the bridge might look like from different vantage points.

The kind of bridge they showed is called a cable stayed bridge, which is in use in different places across the country. The bridges are referred to in many communities as signature bridges because of their aesthetic appeal.

Both committees discussed everything from the loss of some residents' homes to improvements at local city parks.

"The connection is what's going to be critical. You've got the connection if you're coming from the Portland Area into the downtown. There will be a new way to get in and out of the downtown," said Tom Niskala, director of transportation planning for the Metropolitan Planning Organization. "If you're going toward Portland or the aquarium, the Texas State Aquarium, you're going to have a new entrance there, about Beach Avenue. So it will have to be redesigned to provide efficient and effective movement into that area."

Eight neighborhood and storefront meetings are planned over the next month to answer questions of affected residents and businesses. If you are interested in attending one or more of those meetings, you can find a complete listing of them at ccharborbridgeproject.com.

Another public meeting on the project is set for Feb. 18 at the Solomon P. Ortiz Center.

If all goes well, construction of the new Harbor Bridge could begin in 2015 and is expected to be completed after four or five years.
