Javelina Men Knocked Off By Unbeaten Tarleton St.

KINGSVILLE (Javelinas Athletics) - In the Lone Star Conference home opener Saturday afternoon on Kingsville Hampton Inn Court, the Texas A&M-Kingsville men's basketball team had five players in double figures but could not overcome 38 fouls and the ninth-ranked Texans of Tarleton State in a 103-84 loss.

Kingsville fell to 5-9 overall and 0-2 in the league. TSU remained unbeaten at 13-0 and 2-0 in the LSC.

The 38 fouls against the Javelinas were the most in over 10 years as were the combined 68 between the two sides. Three Javelinas – Rashad Basey, Robert Powell and Daymon Warren – fouled out in the game, while two Texans were disqualified by fouls. The two sides frequented the foul line as TSU was 41-of-48 in the contest, while Kingsville was 27-of-39.

The Javelinas did not lead in the contest but stayed within an arm's reach of the Texans in the first half. After trailing by 10 seven minutes, the Javelinas used back-to-back 3-point plays to pull within a point at 28-27 with 6:50 left in the half. Adonis Bailey converted the first, while Ronald Scott benefitted from a Dwight Taylor steal for the next.

The margin was again a point after a Dwight Taylor bucket with 4:46 remaining pulled the Hoggies to within 33-32. However, TSU closed out the half by outscoring the Javelinas 15-7 and led 48-39 at the intermission.

In the second half, the Javelinas could get no closer than seven points as Warren scored to open the half.

Bailey led the Javelinas with 17 points. He was 4-of-8 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the foul line. Basey added 14 points, while Irvin Hollinger and Ronald Scott each netted 12. Jordan Jahr came off the bench to tally 10.

De'Andre Upchurch led the visitors with 27 points, while Chuck Guy had 18 points. The twosome combined to go 15-of-17 from the foul line.

As a team, the Javelinas hit 46.4% from the floor including a 13-of-26 second-half performance, while TSU finished at 60.5% from the floor and was 10-of-17 from the 3-point line. The two sides had 29 rebounds apiece. Tarleton had 12 turnovers and Kingsville just 11.

The men will return to Kingsville Hampton Inn Court on Wednesday at noon when Eastern New Mexico visitors in a crucial LSC clash. The game will also be part of the annual "Live the Dream" promotion in which 2,000 elementary students will be in attendance with speakers talking about the importance of a college education speaking between games. The event is sponsored by HEB.
