Second Swine Flu Death in Nueces County this Week

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The City-County Health Department confirmed yet another death from H1N1 flu in Nueces County Tuesday, making it the second swine flu death this week.

Family members identified the woman as 80-year old Christina Trejo. They said she passed away Monday night from the swine flu.

Trejo had been in the hospital since just after Christmas. Family members said it started with a cough, and then she ended up being diagnosed with pneumonia and then H1N1.

Family said that the 80-year old woman did not get a flu shot.

City-County Health Authority Dr. William Burgin said that even with this latest death, there has not been a significant outbreak of swine flu in Nueces County.

"Every year we have 23,000-33,000 deaths just from the regular flu across the U.S.," Burgin said. "It's not unusual to have a flu death. Anytime you have one related to swine flu, you get a little concerned because of the epidemic we had in 2009."

Burgin said we are already past the peak of the flu season here in the Coastal Bend. However, he did warn that if you show symptoms, including fever, cough and achiness, stay home and remember to wash your hands often.

According to the City-County Health Department, even if you get a flu shot, it's not 100-percent protective. So you definitely need to take precautions around others who you suspect have the flu.

If you have not gotten your flu shot yet, a free flu shot clinic will be held this weekend. The community-wide clinic will be held from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday in the Christus Spohn Caravan at the First United Methodist Church inside the fellowship hall on Ocean Drive.

They will have about 200 flu vaccines available, and the shot will not cost you anything.
