Illegal Animal Trap Found in Dunes at J.P. Luby Surf Park

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Texas Parks and Wildlife rangers discovered an illegal trap at J.P. Luby Park Thursday that is used to capture animals like coyotes.

The find stirred up concerns that the trap may be linked to nearly two dozen coyote carcasses found dumped on Padre Island this past weekend. Those carcasses had been skinned and beheaded. 3News broke that grisly story over the weekend.

According to rangers, a person walking their dog through the sand dunes at J.P. Luby had found the trap and called police. Rangers said it is illegal to set traps like the one that was found because of the harm the trap could cause to humans walking in the area.

It is not illegal to shoot and kill coyotes on private property outside of the city limits, as long as you have a Texas hunter's license and the property owner's permission. However, it is illegal to dump the carcasses, as was done in this case.
