Coastal Bend Residents Gather to Honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn. in 1968. On Monday, people all over the nation honored his legacy, including here in the Coastal Bend.

A week of events honoring the late civil rights icon wrapped up Monday with a celebration and march that began at the Nueces County Courthouse. Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns was there for the march and went Live from I-37 near MLK Drive with the details.

Dr. King was born Jan. 15, 1929, so he would have turned 85 years old this month. The beginning of Monday's march at the county courthouse was as much a revival as it was a celebration.

Speeches from community leaders and local pastors inspired the crowd by reminding them what Dr. King believed in and preached. Several speakers pointed out the crowd was a mix of all races, and it was good to see that kind of diversity for the celebration.

The parade ended at the Church of the Good Shepherd on South Upper Broadway, where marchers enjoyed more inspirational words from the pulpit and community singing. Police estimated the crowd at almost 500 people, which pleased all of those involved with Monday's celebration and march.
