Fishing Spot Off Packery Channel No Longer Open to Public

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A popular fishing spot on Packery Channel is now closed to the public, but what many might not have known is that, for years, the land has been private property.

Kiii News Reporter Anayeli Ruiz went Live from that location with details on why authorities have recently put in a "no trespassing" sign, and what kind of fines you could be facing if you are in violation.

The spot is on the west side of Highway 361, just before you cross the bridge over the Packery Channel heading toward Port Aransas. On Friday, the Corpus Christi Police Department placed orange "no trespassing" signs at that location. The reason -- many of the people who hang out in that area were littering, starting campfires and leaving their mess behind.

The owners of the land decided to close it off from the public. They were fed up with the mess and contacted Code Enforcement to do something about it.

So now, if you are caught on their property, you could be facing more than just a fine -- you could be arrested and even face up to 180 days in jail. The penalty you end up facing is up to the officers discretion.

Some residents agree with the changes.

"I think it's needed. I think it should be closed," said Leonard Sorensen, who was visiting Padre Island. "The people around here are just trashing every public access they can get to. Unless there is a change, they don't deserve to fish in these private places."

The number one tip that the CCPD has for residents is to make sure to check your surroundings and look for posted signs, just to be sure that you are supposed to be on that property. When in doubt, make sure to ask someone.

The owners of the property are also considering fencing in their land to keep trespassers out.
