City Seeks Approval for $6.5 Million Seawall Maintenance Plan

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The City is waiting on the approval of $6.5 million in funds for a seawall and flood protection maintenance plan, which City leaders say will protect the entire downtown area.

There are many places around the bay that are in need of maintenance and updating, including the seawall that juts out from Magee Beach. The Type A board, which is in charge of allocating a portion of the .08-cent sales tax to select projects, will decide if the seawall maintenance project will get those funds.

City leaders, including Mayor Nelda Martinez, said a lot of work needs to be done.

"There's the levy. There's the barge. There's some consideration of other improvements going toward the southside, and also some on the northside," Martinez said. "And they're very specific and detailed, and we'll take a step back. Take it to the 4-A board and then have an opportunity for consideration."

"There are some funds that could be allocated toward improving Magee Beach, and Magee Beach is a great asset for the downtown area," said Natasha Fudge, director of capital programs, "but one thing that perhaps citizens aren't aware of, it actually helps provide flood protection for the downtown area."

The projects involve everything from reconditioning and new concrete to painting and even assessment. The Type A board is expected to decide on the seawall maintenance funding soon, and City Council could approve the project as early as their next meeting.
