Competitors Will Increasingly Have to Cater to Group Purchasing Organizations for Success, According to Decision Resources Group
BURLINGTON, Mass., Jan. 23, 2014 /PRNewswire/-- According to Decision Resources Group (DRG), France and Germany will offer competitors in the European spinal implant market the greatest opportunities for revenue expansion through 2022. These countries have not been as adversely affected by the European economic crisis as Italy and Spain, and austerity measures have not been implemented to the same extent. Germany in particular will continue to represent the highest volume of procedures and revenues; reimbursement is comparatively favorable in this country, and surgeons are generally more willing to adopt new technologies compared to those practicing elsewhere.
The growing presence of group purchasing organizations (GPOs) will increasingly affect market dynamics in Europe. These groups enable facilities to make bulk purchases of spinal and other orthopedic implants by combining the buying power of multiple hospitals to leverage discounts from manufacturers. Although GPOs exist across Europe, they have a particularly strong presence in Germany, where the vast majority of spinal implants are sold through GPOs.
"Larger competitors will need to respond to the trend toward GPOs by offering a diverse product portfolio across device types, enabling them to establish a supplier-of-choice relationship with hospitals," said DRG Analyst René Azeez. "Companies will need to be able to sustain price cuts in response to pressure from GPOs, which will make it difficult for smaller competitors to compete. Small companies also struggle to produce sufficient product volumes to enable bulk purchasing discounts, putting them at a marked disadvantage. Nonetheless, small companies that offer innovative products and leverage local surgeon relationships have opportunity for growth in the complex European spinal implant market. For example, Spineart, LDR, Alphatec Spine and MEDICREA have all successfully built relationships with surgeons in France, where there is a general preference among physicians for local companies."
