At least three people were killed Saturday in a shooting at a shopping mall in Columbia, Md., near Baltimore on Saturday, police said.

"Three people confirmed dead at Columbia Mall. Victims unknown at this time," Howard County, Md., police wrote in a tweet.

In a separate post on Twitter, police added that one of the victims was located near a gun and ammunition.

Police said the first 911 call reporting a shooting at the mall was received at 11:15 a.m. As of approximately 12:30 p.m., they said they hadn't received reports of additional shots heard following the initial burst of gunfire.

Still, people in the mall were ordered to stay in place until police could verify the safety of each area, according Howard County Police.

Howard County Fire and Emergency Management Services urged people to stay away from the area.

A man whose daughter was in the mall told NBCWashington.com that she told him over the phone that she was taking shelter inside of a Bank of America inside the mall with dozens of others.

A security spokesman at the mall told NBC News that "the situation may be over," adding that the mall was closed.
