Texas A&M-CC Women Get Largest Conference Win in School History

Posted: Updated:

CORPUS CHRISTI (Islanders Athletics) - After setting a record for largest margin of victory against a Southland opponent on Thursday with a 29-point win against Southeastern La., the Islanders blew that out of the water with a 97-44 victory against New Orleans on Saturday.

The 97 points tied for the most points scored since March 17, 2010, as the Islanders (10-9, 3-5 in Southland Conference play) posted that same point total against Cal State-Bakersfield. It also marked the second most points in a Southland game, falling just two points short of that mark, as they scored 99 against Sam Houston State on March 9, 2010.

On the defensive side, this marked the fewest points allowed against A&M – Corpus Christi this season.

The Islanders did not make the first meeting with UNO (0-19, 0-8) a pleasant one for the visitors, outdoing them in nearly every category. This included a 52-23 advantage on the boards and a shooting percentage that was 15 percent better than the Privateers.

Once again, it was a solid team performance for the Islanders, as they had five different players in double figures. Camesha Davis scored the most out of the five, as she set career highs in points and rebounds with 19 and 11 to record her first career double-double.

Shola Adebayo hit seven free throws on her way to 15 points. Kassie Jones was nearly perfect from the field, hitting six of her seven shots for 12 points to go along with five assists.

Brandi Huff and Ashanti Plummer rounded out the five players in double figures, as the two posts went for 14 and 10, respectively. It was the first time in her career that Plummer hit double digits. Both players came off the bench and helped the bench's tally of 47 points.

The Islanders got on the board on the very first possession, as after an 0-for-5 performance from behind the arc against Southeastern La., Brittany Mbamalu hit a triple just 27 seconds in.

The Privateers came right back with a layup to pull within one, but another deadly three-point shooter hit one early to put the Islanders up 6-2 with 18:28 left on the clock.

Once again UNO pulled within one with a three of its own, but Jones notched her first points of the game before Mbamalu hit another trey to build the Islanders' lead up to six. Jones then scored in transition after Shaw found her sprinting to the hoop for a layup to put the home team up 13-5 with 16:23 left in the first.

The Privateers pulled back within three twice at 13-10 and 15-12 before Camesha Davis converted on an and one to start an 8-2 run to put the Islanders up 23-14 with 11:08 on the clock.

UNO hit three free throws to cut it down to a six-point Islander lead at 10:09, but that is when A&M – Corpus Christi started to dominate.

In the final 10 minutes of the half, the Islanders went 10-20 from the field and scooped up 18 rebounds to finish out the first half on a 27-7 run to head into halftime with a 50-24 lead, the Islanders most points scored in the first 20 minutes, as well as their largest halftime lead of the season.

Coming out of the half the Islanders continued their offensive output, pushing their lead up to 38 with 14 of the first 18 points of the half.

After UNO hit a pair of free throws, the Islanders went on another big run. This time A&M – Corpus Christi outscored the Privateers 13-0 to jump out to a huge 79-30 lead with 10 minutes left in the half.

The Privateers showed they still had some fight left in them with a 9-2 run, but the Islanders were just too much for UNO, as they closed on a 13-5 run to finish with a 53-point victory.

Part of the reason the Islanders were able to extend the margin so high was due to the fact that they got into the bonus with 14:31 remaining in the half and went 22-27 from the line in the final 20 minutes of play.

The first stop on a season-high four-game road trip for the Islanders will come at Huntsville, Texas, as they will take on Sam Houston State at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.
