Oak Park Parents On Edge After Stranger Danger Incident

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Parents and officials at one elementary school are keeping a closer eye on their children after a reported stranger-danger incident.

A fifth grader at Oak Park Special Emphasis School told her mom that a man tried to pick her up. The reported encounter took place Tuesday along Leopard Street, just down from the school, while the girl was walking home.

The girl told her mom that a man in a car honked and waved for her to get in his car. The mother then contacted the school principal.

A letter was sent out to parents telling them of the incident and giving them advice on what to tell their children about how to handle strangers.

"I don't even think in groups the kids are that safe in this area," said Michelle Kropetz, the mother of an Oak Park student. "This is a bad area."

"It's kind of scary, the world we live in today, but it is the world we live in today," Oak Park parent Larry Amaya said. "Everybody needs to do their part to ensure the safety of our kids, from students, to parents, to police."

"Luckily Officer Cantu, who is our police officer, had just been here two weeks ago to talk about stranger danger, so the student was a model student as to what to do in case of an emergency," Kellye Loving said.

No suspect has been tracked down at this time. Police continue to patrol the area just in case he thinks about making a repeat appearance.
