Driver Falls Asleep at the Wheel, Left Critical After Head-On Collision

Posted: Updated:
KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) -

A head-on collision on Highway 141 in Kingsville left one driver in critical condition. Authorities say that the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel before swerving into oncoming traffic.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. The 24-year old driver of a black Nissan Altima told first responders that he had dozed off while driving and swerved into the oncoming lane of Highway 141, colliding head-on with a van and causing it to rollover.

Emergency crews had to extract the driver of the Altima from his vehicle using the jaws of life. He was sent to Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital via HALO Flight in critical condition.

The driver of the van, a 25-year old female, was taken by ambulance to an area hospital. She was in stable condition at the scene.

"Obviously it really caused a situation here that could have been worse, and so I would tell people, if they are tired, pull over or let somebody else drive, or make other arrangements," said Trooper Lynn Floyd of the Department of Public Safety.

Highway 141 was closed for several hours as crews cleared the scene of the accident.
