CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Two companies were honored Tuesday for their support of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's mechanical engineering program.

The event was called the "Friends of Engineering" Awards Luncheon, and it was held at the Corpus Christi Town Club. Flint Hills Resources and AEP Texas were honored for their contributions to the schools of computer science and engineering.

"The program simply would not have happened without the kind of community support that we have going into the program and continuing into today," TAMUCC President Flavius Killebrew said.

If approved by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the University plans to begin accepting its first class of electrical engineering students in the fall of 2015.
