Arrangements Made to Keep Ronnie Canales in the Appraisal District

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Chief Appraiser Ronnie Canales went before the Tax Appraisal Board Thursday to formally tender his resignation. However, arrangements were made to keep him working for the Nueces County Appraisal District.

Canales announced his intent to resign on Monday, citing an anonymous letter that called his qualifications into question. According to the letter, Canales, who has held the position of chief appraiser since 2012, no longer qualified for the position after a new rule went into effect on Jan. 1.

That rule requires all chief appraisers to hold a Level 4 Registered Professional Appraiser certification, or RPA. Canales currently holds a Level 3 RPA.

Rather than leave the Appraisal District altogether, Canales will be switching roles with Assistant Chief Appraiser Robert Cenci, who does hold a Level 4 RPA.

In the meantime, Canales said he plans to get his Level 4 certification, but no timeline is in place for that to happen.
