CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Mayor Nelda Martinez delivered the State of the City address to a nearly packed house in the Henry Garrett Ballroom at the American Bank Center Thursday.

Among other things, she commended Police Chief Floyd Simpson, saying his policies have cut fatalities on the streets by a third. She also praised Fire Chief Robert Rocha for cutting the Fire Department's average response times for emergencies.

There was also a video highlighting just some of the accomplishments here over the past year -- the Chaparral Street Project downtown, the new Schlitterbahn Waterpark on Padre Island. At one point, the mayor even used sunglasses to demonstrate just how bright the future is.

However, she said there is still plenty of work to be done.

"We still have significant infrastructure needs, so we're going to address those and we're also going to be prudent, and we're not going to bet on the come, and leverage our assets," Martinez said. "This is the time when thing's are going well; that we're conservative and make sure we do right by our taxpayers."

The mayor also told the crowd that the Eagle Ford Shale-driven oil boom is clearly one of the big reasons for the boom times here in South Texas.
