KINGSVILLE (Javelinas Athletics) - The Texas A&M-Kingsville women's basketball team stayed with fifth-ranked West Texas A&M into the second half Saturday afternoon before falling 81-70 at Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.

The Javelinas (8-12, 3-7) were within three points, 42-39, of the Lady Buffs (19-1, 10-0) following a Lauren Jay jumper with 4-1/2 minutes into the final half. However, West Texas responded with an 11-3 run to take a 53-41.

The Buffs went on to extend their lead to as many 17 points with just under eight minutes remaining. The Hoggies could get no closer than 11 with five seconds remaining on a Micah Weaver basket with five seconds left.

Kingsville jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first half behind a pair of early 3-point baskets by Ashley Viera and led until the 13-minute mark. WT would lead 36-30 at the intermission.

The Javelinas forced 26 turnovers in the game, while committing just 25. However, Kingsville could not slow the visitors down from long range as the Lady Buffs hit 11, 3-point baskets.

Four Javelinas finished with double digits. Jay and Viera led Kingsville with 14 points apiece, while Rosalie Cutri had 11 points and Sheana Jones had 10. Cutri finished with a team-high three assists.

Kingsville's chances were hampered by a pair of second half injuries. Lindsey Mahone finished with six points after leaving early in the second half after a fall. Viera also left with an injury in the second half but did return.

Casey Land led WT with 20 points, while Devin Griffin added 15 points and 10 rebounds. Lacee Logan added 14 and Sally Higgins 10. The visitors out-rebounded Kingsville 48-25.

The Javelinas have two midweek games this week. They host Texas Woman's on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Play for Kay contest sponsored by Christus Spohn Hospital Kleberg for cancer awareness. They face Texas A&M-Commerce on Thursday at 6 p.m.
