Javelinas Swept By Southern Arkansas in Battle of Ranked Teams

KINGSVILLE (Javelinas Athletics) - The Texas A&M-Kingsville baseball team dropped a 7-3 decision to Southern Arkansas on Sunday as the visiting Muleriders swept the 3-game series at Nolan Ryan Field.

The Javelinas move to 2-3 on the season, while Southern Arkansas is 6-1.

Kingsville found itself down 7-0 entering the bottom of the eighth before breaking through for three runs.

Cline Andrews led the inning off with a single and advanced to second on a base hit by Derrick Walls. Andrews scored on a single to left by Taylor Taska , Walls scooted around to score on the play as the ball was overrun in left field. Taska scored an unearned run on a ground ball by Ryan Guedry.

The Javelinas looked to continue the rally in the ninth as Justin Lee singled to start the inning for his third hit of the game. Lee would be stranded at first.

After a scoring an unearned run in the second, the Muleriders added four in the third for a 5-0 advantage. Three of the runs came on double by Justin Buchanan, who had four RBI on the day.

The score remained 5-0 until the eighth inning when Southern Arkansas added two more runs in the top of the inning.

Denver Diefenbach suffered the loss moving to 1-1 on the season. Diefenbach went six innings allowing five runs with four earned. He fanned five and walked two. Three relievers followed pitched an inning apiece. Carl Huizar tossed a perfect seventh, while Tres Tyler allowed a pair of runs with one earned on two hits. Ryan Scott allowed a hit in an inning of relief.

Offensively, the Javelinas had eight hits. Aside from Lee's three hits, five others had a hit.

Cory Roper (1-0) earned the win for Southern. He allowed one run on five hits in 7-1/3 innings, while striking out three. The Muleriders had 12 hits led by Jackson McCurdy with three. Tyler Cameron, Chase Harvey and Buchanan each had two hits.

The Javelinas return to action on Friday when they travel to Houston-Victoria at 5 p.m.
