Bomb Squad Making Beeping Easter Eggs for Blind Children

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Members of the Corpus Christi Police Bomb Squad are planning a special Easter event for kids who are legally blind.

They're not traditional Easter eggs, but instead, the eggs are specifically made for kids that are blind. They will be the centerpiece of something called a "Beeping Extravaganza."

The Corpus Christi Bomb Squad has been hard at work building the devices.

"They rely on their hearing so much that this is almost second nature to them to follow that sound," said Alana Manrow of Lighthouse for the Blind.

It all started after a Bomb Squad tech heard about other departments across the country making special eggs for children that are blind. He wanted to bring that same project to the Corpus Christi area.

"He went as far as constructing a couple of eggs and blindfolding his children and letting them see how well the concept had worked," said Captain David Cook of the Corpus Christi Police Department.

The CCPD was immediately on board. They have partnered with Lighthouse for the Blind to help 130 visually impaired children enjoy the Easter tradition.

"Were very excited to participate in this, especially if its going to put a smile on a child's face," Manrow said. "It's worth it."

However, before the event, they need your help. They need money to complete the building of the eggs. The average price for each one is about $18.

"It will give them some sense of normality, allow them to participate in an event that they would normally not be invited to or be able to participate in," Cook said.

If you would like to make a donation, you can contact the Lighthouse for the Blind. They are taking in donations for the eggs and prizes and games for the kids. The egg hunt is set for April 13, the weekend before Easter.
