CCISD Grief Counselors Help Kids Cope with Classmates' Deaths

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Grief counselors were on hand at Corpus Christi Independent School District schools Monday in the wake of recent deaths involving children this weekend.

Six-year old Nevaeh Oliva, who was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting Sunday night, was a first grader at Berlanga Elementary School, and word of her death rocked that campus. Grief counselors were on hand at the school to help students cope with her passing.

Corpus Christi Independent School District officials said that counselors get refresher courses at the beginning of the school year to prepare for such tragedies; but Dr. Lea Rosales, coordinator for guidance and counseling, said parents play a big part in helping their children get through difficult times.

"We really encouraged the parents to be available to their children to listen to them and talk to them, to help to feel safe," Rosales said. "And that they are okay. And that it's part of life."

Counselors were also at Sam Houston Elementary, where six-year old Greg Martinez attended school. He was killed over the weekend when he was run over by a vehicle.
