CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

The Harbor Bridge has become a beloved part of the Corpus Christi skyline, but needs safety updates.

3News Reporter Sarah Acosta was live with Public Information Officer with TxDOT Rickey Daily, with updates from the Tuesday Public Hearing on the Harbor Bridge held by TxDOT.

Some of the biggest changes to the bridge include placement, length and height and safety updates.

Plans for the new bridge include moving the bridge 1,000 feet from the current location. The future bridge would be much longer and taller.

The bottom of the potential new bridge would be where the top of the current bridge stands.

Safer features will be a big part of in the plans for the new bridge. The current bridge has sharp curves at the start of the bridge which has caused accidents and turnovers due to the quick turns.

TxDOT hopes to get federal approval of the new bridge plans by this Fall and construction could begin as early as 2015.

The estimated cost will be from $500 to $680 million dollars. That money will come from state, federal and local entities donations in the Coastal Bend.
