Statue of Coach Gil Steinke to be Housed at Javelina Stadium

KINGSVILLE (Kiii News) -

It seems the dispute between the Texas A&I Alumni Association and Texas A&M University-Kingsville President Steven Tallant, who vowed never to permit a particular statue be erected on campus, has finally been settled.

University officials announced Wednesday that an agreement has been reached between TAMUK and the Alumni Association to house the statue of legendary football coach Gil Steinke at Javelina Stadium.

During their announcement, it was revealed that Kingsville Mayor Sam Fugate was instrumental in helping the two sides settle their difference and reach an agreement.

"These two organizations were so upset about the name change and emotional about that," Fugate said. "I said you know, and this is what I told both parties -- 'We need to get over that. Let's forget about that. You're not going to change either one's position,' but I said there's one thing we can agree on, is that Coach Steinke was a great man."

The University said the Steinke statue will be in a stand-alone display in the Javelina Stadium complex, and that it will be in place prior to the start of the football season in fall of 2014.
