Whooping Crane Festival Brings Tourists to See Endangered Birds

Posted: Updated:
PORT ARANSAS (Kiii News) -

Port Aransas is celebrating the Winter Texans who have flown more than 2,500 miles to get to the Coastal Bend -- only these Winter Texans aren't people, they're whooping cranes.

The 18th annual Whooping Crane Festival kicked off on Friday with tours to view the unique birds, seminars and a trade show. People from as far as Canada travel to the festival to get a glance at the highly endangered species -- there are only 500 left in the world.

One of the guest speakers at the festival is from the Wood Buffalo National Park in Canada, the natural nesting ground of the flock that visits the Coastal Bend. He said it is very difficult to observe the cranes in Canada, so it's a treat to see them here so up close.
