Investigation Into Tragic Death of Four-Year Old Girl Complete

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Police have completed their investigation into the death of four-year old Emma Rose Sanchez, who was killed by a falling barbecue pit Thursday evening.

It was around 4:30 p.m. when the Emma was struck in the head by the falling barbecue pit outside of her home on Sharpsburg Road.

Police said she was playing with other children and, while standing on a skateboard, she reached out and grabbed the barbecue pit for support. Her uncle was close by and warned her to stay away, but the pit fell and struck her on the head.

Emma lost consciousness before police arrived at the scene, and was pronounced dead at about 8 p.m. at Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital.

Lt. Patrick McMenamy of the Corpus Christi Police Department's family violence unit said the investigation into the incident is over.

"Our initial investigation has determined that this is going to be nothing more than a horrible, terrible accident, and we're not going to be moving forward with any type of criminal charges at this time," McMenamy said.

Funeral services for Emma have been arranged. A rosary is set to begin at 7 p.m. Monday at Saxet Funeral Home, with a memorial service the following morning at 10 a.m. It will be held at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the San Patricio Cemetery.

Police say they hope parents will be inspired to double check their home for anything that might injure their children -- the only hint at a silver lining from what they believe was a horrible and tragic accident.

An account has been set up to help the family of Emma cover funeral costs. You can help them out by donating to account #1589920857 at any Wells Fargo Bank.
