Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Tax season has returned and to help those who need tax assistance, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi's accounting students are stepping up to help.

It's all part of the Internal Revenue Service's Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program, which gives accounting students an opportunity for hands-on experience working with clients to prepare tax returns. At the same time, it gives low-income families the chance to have their taxes done for free.

Most families earning less than $55,000, military families and taxpayers over 60 are eligible to have their tax returns prepared for free.

It you plan to seek out this assistance, here's what you will need:
• Government-issued photo ID
• Social Security card or ITIN numbers for taxpayer, spouses and dependents
• Birth dates for primary, secondary and dependents on the tax return
• If married and filing jointly, both spouses must be present
• All wage and earning statement(s) Form W-2, W-2G, 1099-R
• Interest and dividend statements from banks (Forms 1099)
• Proof of day-care expenses paid including: provider's name, address, and federal ID number
• A copy of last year's federal and state returns (if available)
• Bank routing numbers and account numbers for a direct deposit refund
• Other relevant income and expense information

VITA program services will be provided through April 15 at the following locations:
• Del Mar College, 101 Baldwin, Venters Business Building: Tuesdays & Thursdays 2:30 - 7 p.m.
