Flour Bluff Residents Voice Concerns About Proposed Transmission Lines

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A number of Flour Bluff residents showed up at City Hall Tuesday to voice their concerns about some new high power transmission towers slated to run through their neighborhood.

The lines would run from the Barney Davis Power Plant to Naval Air Station-Corpus Christi.

Kiii News Reporter Brian Burns spoke with some of those residents and went Live from outside of NAS-Corpus Christi with more details.

The power lines will be another backup source of electricity for NAS-Corpus Christi, but where they will run through Flour Bluff prompted residents to line up at before City Council to speak about the routes.

Proposed routes for the line include Waldron Road, Flour Bluff Drive, Laguna Shores and Oso Bay itself. The lines are already scheduled to be built, but residents and the City don't want the lines to impact tourism, jobs, residents or the environment.

Tom Tagliabue, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs, said the City wants to see the lines underground as much as possible.

"Wherever it's located, whether it's above ground or below ground, does the least impact to the infrastructure, the least impact to neighborhoods, the least impact to the environment and the least impact to our tax base," Tagliabue said.

The transmission lines stand on towers that are 85 feet tall, on a path that is 100 feet wide. The Public Utilities Commission is not scheduled to choose a route until later this year, and the lines should be up by 2016.
