CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A NASA satellite launched from Japan Thursday afternoon will be providing a Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi professor with a valuable new source of information.

Dr. Chuntao Liu, assistant professor of atmospheric science at TAMUCC, is a member of the NASA science team, and will be validating data collected from the satellite to develop formulas determining how much precipitation is hitting the ground.

The satellite was set for launch between 12:07-2:02 p.m. Thursday, and will replace one that has been in orbit since 1997. Scientists hope that it will help them to better understand the global water cycle, severe weather and climate change.
