Residents Rallying Against Windstorm Insurance Surcharges

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Coastal Bend residents are being asked to rally against proposed rate hikes by the Texas Department of Insurance or TDI. This demonstration was held yesterday in downtown Corpus Christi to let people know about a proposed surcharge on auto and casualty insurance hikes affecting residents living along the gulf coast. The TDI plans on holding a public hearing regarding the matter and how it attempts to better fund the windstorm insurance program. The Chamber of Commerce says residents should be concerned.

"Now your assessment on those is an unknown amount," said President and CEO of the Corpus Christi Chamber of Commerce. "One of our problems with this, it's an unknown assessment. We don't know how much it's going to be. The TDI is just going to say it's going to be 5%, 10% or whatever they chose."

The windstorm public hearing is next Wednesday at the Island University. The event gets underway at 9 a.m. in ballrooms "b" and "c" in the university center.
