Four Arrests Made in Connection with the Cheryl Drive Shooting

CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

A press conference was held at the Corpus Christi Police Department headquarters at 11 a.m. Friday to detail the arrests made in connection with the Feb. 16 shooting on Cheryl Drive.

That shooting left six-year old Nevaeh Oliva and two-year old Lillian Valent dead.

According to Police Chief Floyd Simpson, who was one of the first to speak at the podium, a combination of help from the public and the media, along with the hard work of CCPD investigators, helped police obtain the arrest warrants for the two suspects Thursday night.

Those suspects were 26-year old Brendon Gaytan and 22-year old Cruz Salazar.

Gaytan and Salazar were located at a home in the 800 block of Indiana Avenue, where police converged at around 1 a.m. Friday. Chief Simpson said that they "had the element of surprise," and everything went as smoothly as it could.

The two suspects were arrested without incident.

Police also confirmed that two other suspects, 48-year old Juanita Bustamante and 26-year old Maricela Bustamante, were arrested a week ago at a home in the 100 block of Adams Street and charged with tampering with evidence.

Nevaeh's grandfather provided a statement on behalf of the family:

"Well, I like to start by saying thank God that  they caught them. Justice will be served for my granddaughter. I would like to thank the CCPD for doing a good job in the investigation; in solving this case. And would like to thank the community and public for their love and support they are giving my daughter and my son-in-law and the rest of the family. Now we, the family, can begin to heal. Justice will be served. I would not like to meet. I do ask the media to respect the privacy of my family so that we can grieve my granddaughter. Thank you once again for the love and support from the public and community for my family."

Chief Simpson said that despite the arrests, the job is still not over. There is more evidence to gather, more interviews to conduct and more work to be done. Since it is still an ongoing investigation, many details of the arrests and the crime are still being treated as evidence, and are not ready to be released.

District Attorney Mark Skurka also spoke from the podium at Friday's news conference, praising the work to the CCPD and saying he is proud to be able to work with them to bring the suspects to justice. He said that since the investigation is still ongoing, there could be more charges, but as of right now, Gaytan and Salazar are charged with capital murder.

Bond has been set at $2 million for each suspect.
