CASA Burglary Suspect Gets 10-Year Sentence After Heated Exchange

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Drama followed a sentencing in the Nueces County Courthouse Tuesday after a man suspected of burglarizing a non-profit group and an apartment pled guilty.

Before the heated exchange, Andrew Peña pled guilty in the 319th District Court for burglarizing the CASA building and an apartment in January. He will serve 22 months in jail for the burglary charges, but the judge added an extra 10 years to that sentence because Peña violated his probation.

"If the defendant comes in here like this one did and shows a disdain for the system and lack of remorse, he's free to simply say that 'I am going to accept your plea of true, but I am not going to accept the states recommendation to reduce your sentence,' so he's going for the whole 10 years," prosecutor Doug Mann said.

Peña will be eligible for parole in three and a half years.
