Someone to Know: Winter Texan Becky Shottenkirk

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

They call her mom -- a winter Texan who makes a difference in the lives of local servicemen and women. Becky Shottenkirk has given hours and hours of service and care.

Becky volunteers at the USO twice a week.

"Corpus Christi looked like a nice place to visit, and I think we're going to be back next year," Becky said. "We've really been embraced here and felt very welcome as winter Texans."

An army wife at 22 years old, Becky has felt connected to the military for many years. She and her husband were recently on hand at the USO Diaper Drive in January. The couple also has twin sons who joined the U.S. Marines after college. One son is now at the Pentagon as a legislative liaison, and the other one is in the Australian Defense Force.

"They go to the USOs in airports all around the country, and it was just something I could do to give back," Becky said.

"It was like she belonged here. It was like she was part of the family immediately,: said Nancy Allen, president and CEO of the USO of South Texas. "The kids just love her. She was a former administrative assistant, so that has helped tremendously in the office."

Allen said when Becky is not helping around the office, she does what she can to make military personnel feel at home.

"They're like, 'We want your cookbook. We want your brownie recipe,' and 'Give me a hug,'" Allen said. "They love Ms. Becky's hugs."

"I've probably gotten more out of it than they have, but I've just thoroughly enjoyed it," Becky said.
