Garage Fire in Flour Bluff Causes Loud Explosion

Posted: Updated:
CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) -

Some Flour Bluff residents were awakened by a loud explosion Wednesday morning when a fire broke out at a home on Hialeah and Jamaica Drive.

"It's like a bomb. It's like a bomb, and then I thought somebody hit my car because it's parked right here, but then I saw the smoke," Flour Bluff resident Cynthia Knowlton said.

The fire broke out at around 8:45 a.m. Fortunately, no one was home at the time.

Firefighters do not yet know the cause of the fire, but did say that it started in the garage, where a number of things could have made the explosive sound neighbors were referring to.

"A lot of things are kept in the garage as far as aerosol cans," said Battalion Chief Doug Matthijetz of the Corpus Christi Fire Department. "Things like that will pop and explode or go off, and we have a propane cylinder in there."

Fire officials said they were able to contain the fire in 15 minutes. The home had heavy smoke damage, most of which was contained to the garage.
